Ureteroscopy

What is it?

A ureteroscopy is a procedure used to treat kidney stones or tumours in the ureter or kidney. A small camera (ureteroscope) is passed through the urethra and bladder and up into the ureter. Stones can be broken up using a laser and removed, or biopsies can be taken. The procedure is done in the hospital while you are asleep under anaesthetic. There are no cuts or incisions. Most patients have a ureteric stent placed at the end of the procedure. The stent is a soft plastic tube that holds the ureter open while it heals. It is removed at a later appointment.

Procedure Time: 30 minutes to 1.5 hours
